James D. English
International Secretary-Treasurer |
Jim English has served as Secretary-Treasurer of the United Steelworkers since March 2001, and was re-elected by acclamation to a second four-year term in 2005. As Secretary-Treasurer, Jim is the chief financial officer of the union, and oversees its investments and financial operations as well as its elections and other internal operations. In addition, Jim heads the Rapid Response program, the union's award-winning grassroots legislative initiative, and also directs its grassroots political mobilization program.
In 1994, newly-elected President George Becker named Jim his Executive Assistant, a position he held until 2000 when he served briefly as General Counsel before becoming Secretary-Treasurer.
Jim graduated from Georgetown Law School, worked as an Organizer for the AFLCIO for two years, and in 1968 became a lawyer in the Steelworkers' Legal Department.
He has played a key role in negotiations in the steel, aluminum and container industries, was a major force in the development of OSHA's precedent-breaking lead and coke oven emissions standards, and participated in the negotiation and implementation of most of the USW's mergers with other unions.
Jim currently serves as Trustee on two Taft-Hartley pension plans, the Steelworkers Pension Trust and the multi-union National Industrial Group Pension Plan (NIGPP).
